Canada West Boots — Handmade in Winnipeg Since 1977

The other Canadian boot brand. Smaller than Boulet, harder to find, and quietly building a cult following among people who care about where their boots come from.

Canada West is the boot brand your friend who "knows boots" eventually recommends. They don't have Boulet's national retail presence or Ariat's marketing budget. What they have is a factory in Winnipeg that's been making boots by hand since 1977, and a small but devoted customer base — some people own a dozen pairs.

The Quick Facts

Two Brands Under One Roof

Canada West — The Western Line

Traditional western cowboy boots. Square toes, round toes, classic styling. During COVID, demand for their cowboy boots exploded and they pivoted heavily toward western production.

The quality is excellent — Goodyear welted, full-grain leather uppers, leather lining. These compete with Ariat's Heritage R Toe and Justin's classic line, but they're made in Manitoba instead of Mexico or China.

Styling is straightforward — no flashy embroidery or Instagram-bait designs. If you want a clean, well-made cowboy boot with a Canadian flag on it (literally — some models have it), this is it.

WM Moorby — The Heritage Line

Work and heritage boots. Think: the Canadian version of Red Wing or Thorogood. Moc toes, lace-ups, logger boots.

Built for people who need boots that survive actual work. The WM Moorby line gets a lot of love on r/goodyearwelt and r/BuyCanadian for construction quality that punches well above its price point.

If you're here for western boots specifically, the Canada West line is what you want. But if you see a WM Moorby and think "that looks nice too," go for it — same factory, same quality, different styling.

What Canada West Does Right

Genuine Small-Batch Manufacturing

Canada West isn't "designed in Canada, made elsewhere." The boots are cut, lasted, stitched, and finished in their Winnipeg factory. You can visit. The production volumes are small enough that quality control is tight — you're not getting a boot that slipped through a factory running 10,000 pairs a day.

Consistent Sizing

Unlike Boulet (which runs notoriously small), Canada West boots fit true to Brannock. If you're a 10 on a Brannock device, you're a 10 in Canada West.

Half size down from Nike, which is the standard for most western boot brands. Check our size converter for your specific sneaker brand.

Durability

People report 5–10+ years of hard wear from Canada West boots. The leather is thick, the construction is solid, and because they're Goodyear welted, you can resole them when the original sole wears out. Multiple Reddit users mention owning "almost a dozen pairs" — that's the kind of loyalty you only get from a product that performs.

Where Canada West Falls Short

They're Hard to Find

This is the biggest problem. Canada West doesn't sell direct-to-consumer online (at least not well). You buy through select dealers, and those dealers aren't in every province.

If you're in Atlantic Canada, your options are severely limited. Some dealers have basic e-commerce, but it's nothing like the Amazon.ca or Boot Barn experience.

Check our Canadian retailers directory for dealers that carry Canada West in your province.

Limited Style Range

The western line is small. Maybe 15–20 models at any given time.

If you want a specific combination of toe shape, leather colour, and heel height, Boulet or Ariat give you ten times the options. Canada West makes a few things really well rather than trying to cover every niche.

No Wide Widths (Mostly)

Some models come in E width, but the selection is limited compared to Boulet's 3E/4E range. If you have genuinely wide feet, Boulet is the better Canadian option. See our wide-feet guide.

If you can only buy one Canadian boot brand: Boulet is the practical choice — easier to find, more models, better width options, established retail presence. But if you're near Winnipeg, or you value small-batch manufacturing and can track down a dealer, Canada West is the more boutique experience. Both brands make genuinely excellent boots. You can't go wrong with either.

Who Should Buy Canada West

Canada West is for the person who cares about provenance. You want to know where your boots were made, who made them, and that the factory is still there. You're willing to do some legwork to find the right dealer because the product justifies the effort.

If you want convenience — easy online ordering, wide selection, Amazon returns — Boulet or Ariat serve you better. Canada West rewards the patient buyer.
